What it means
Travel medical insurance covers emergency medical expenses incurred while travelling outside your home province or country — costs that provincial health coverage typically doesn't reimburse, or only partially covers, once you're outside your home jurisdiction.
Why it matters
Medical costs abroad — especially in countries like the United States — can be enormous without coverage, and provincial health plans rarely cover the full cost.
Common misunderstandings
- Provincial health coverage (like OHIP) doesn't fully protect you outside your home province — even within Canada.
- Pre-existing conditions can affect coverage significantly, and not disclosing them accurately can void a claim entirely.
Where you'll see it
Before any trip outside your home province, and as a required component of Super Visa applications.
