What it means

The Canada Child Benefit is a monthly, tax-free payment from the CRA to eligible families with children under 18. The amount depends on the number of children, their ages, and the family's adjusted family net income (AFNI) from the prior year — it's calculated automatically once a family is registered, not applied for annually.

Why it matters

It's often the single largest ongoing government benefit a family with young children receives, and because it's recalculated every July based on the prior year's tax return, filing taxes on time every year — even with no income — is what keeps the payments flowing without interruption.

Common misunderstandings

  • It's tax-free — unlike some other benefits, the amount received doesn't need to be reported as income.
  • It isn't a flat amount per family — it's calculated per child, and phases down as family income rises above a threshold, reaching zero for very high-income households.
  • Registration usually happens automatically through the birth registration process in most provinces, but isn't guaranteed — it's worth confirming directly with the CRA rather than assuming it's been set up.

Where you'll see it

Deposited monthly for any family with children under 18, and recalculated every July based on the previous year's tax return.
